Brain Research
Dyslexia and the brain. Here is a link to the International Dyslexia Association and an article discussing how the role in brain development has been studied in the context of brain anatomy, brain chemistry, and brain function all to help identify the causes of dyslexia and to aid in early intervention and treatment. Myths and Realities One reality of dyslexia is that they have great talents. This Interview shows the hidden gifts of dyslexia!! I greatly enjoy this creative point of view. |

Characteristics by age Early intervention is key in helping children with dyslexia. Click this link for a downloadable PDF on dyslexia screenings for ages K-2. It explains what screenings are and what the benefits are. Here is a link to an article showing what the characteristics are for dyslexia at each age. This seems very beneficial especially to a K-12 teacher. Local and Federal Laws Here is a link to the IDA Handbook for Dyslexia - What every family should know. I love handbooks and anything that involves including families in a way that will help increase success. There are tips of effective teaching approaches and tips on transitioning to college, among other information. Simulations Here is a self-reporting type quiz to see if you might have dyslexia yourself! I found the questions very interesting. This link takes you to an interactive simulation to show you how a child would be able to read at a grade level and with difficulties that you select. Select "EXPERIENCE IT". I chose 4th grade level with difficulty reading, writing, and attention. I couldn't get through more than 2 sentences. In the beginning you hear from a child who is limited by their dyslexia. This link simulates what it is like to read if you are dyslexic as well as a short article from CNN. I thought the simulation was interesting and very difficult. |
