Reading success...
The best solution to the problem of reading failure is to allocate resources for early identification and prevention. Here is an article discussing the importance of reading success! I chose the video on the left because it went into depth about how we can promote reading success as well as what aspects contribute to reading success. I chose the article on the right because it gave great information on early screening for reading. I thought it was well written and very informative.

Phonological Awareness |
Phonological awareness is a broad term that encompasses word awareness, syllable awareness, and phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness is important to developing the alphabetic principle in early stages of word reading. Word awareness can be taught as teachers read aloud and run their finger over the words as they read. Syllable awareness can be taught through clapping the syllables in the children's names. Phonemic awareness can be introduced through drawing attention to phonemes. The graphic to the right shows more details on phonological awareness. The below video is so great. I especially love the description of how phonological awareness can be done with your eyes closed - it's audio! |
Phonics
There are so many fun and beneficial activities to be found for phonics. To the right I have a link to a letter sounds match up game that was fun and educational. At the bottom of the image is another link to even more games to play online to enhance phonics. In today's digital age it is nice to have educational games for them to play instead of the games they inevitably will be playing at home anyway.
Here is a link to an article about the benefits of phonics instruction as well as helpful information about the subject. The article discusses how the ability to read and spell words was enhanced in kindergartners who received systematic beginning phonics instruction and older children receiving phonics instruction were better able to decode and spell words and to read text orally, but their comprehension of text was not significantly improved. It is a very good article. |

Alphabetical Knowledge
Paint By Letter
This game appealed to me because of the alphabetic knowledge paired together with the art of painting. There are more games to play with the ABC's here! |
Here is an article that discusses the importance of alphabetic knowledge as children enter school. If children are not able to recognize relationships with letters as they enter Kindergarten they will need organized instruction that will help them identify, name, and write letters.
Below is a button that will take you to the classic alphabet song that helps children everywhere learn the letters of the alphabet! Here is a video explaining the importance of the alphabetic principle. How knowing the letters of the alphabet is not as important as making sure that children also know the sounds associated with each of the letters of the alphabet!

Decoding Skills
"Decoding skills include the ability to recognize the basic sounds and sound blends called phonemes, that make up a word and to know what the word means, recognize it in context, and know whether or not it's being used correctly in a sentence. Without decoding skills, students would have difficulty ever learning to read." (Morin, 2019). This is the reason why I chose this article to link to this subject to demonstrate how important decoding is.
Here is a video showing how an instructor might introduce letter sounds and help students with decoding.

Above is a fun way to get students engaged in decoding at the beginning of the year! Here is a link to a great site for resources that teachers can use in their classrooms! |
Syllable Types
Here is a video over the six types of syllables! It is really geared towards kids and fun to watch as well as educational.
